Advertising Covers 1850's

Colored advertising covers from this era were usualy cameo ads.
Usualy in the corner and usualy stamped or embossed. In 1849
the envelope making machine was patented, from this point on
printed envelopes became common.

Although rare to see pictorial advertising from this era, this particular
design is quite common.
The most common type of advertising cover was the black printed, without image.
This is one of the fancier examples
This is unusual that it is an early use of the full size engraving

Somewhere around 1859 someone came up with the process for printing
the adverisement in the background. It allowed the advert to
cover the whole envelope and not intefere with the writing.
This is a very early example. It became internationaly popular. Being used
all the way through to the late 1880's
