The Story Behind the Stamp

Image

The Battle of Long Island

New York State petitioned congress to issue a stamp commemorating Major John Sullivan's expedition. Despite his presence at the battles of Princeton (top image), Long Island and many other battles he is remembered most for his campaign against the Iroquois, and this expedition was put forward as the reason for gracing one of the United States stamps.
