The Story Behind the Stamp

Image

A perforator used on rotary press stamps

Previous stamps of this denomination had been printed with the flat plate and perforated 11. For some time the lower values had been printed on the rotary press with a 11 x 10½. It was now time to bring the values above 10¢ to have the same.

Along with the 11¢ this value had little demand and used copies are less common than mint copies.

The design inspiration

Image

The vignette was based on this photograph of Benjamin Harrison, the photograph was chosen by his widow. This vignette was the same used on the 1902 13¢ (#308)
